Scout Island Inspires Artists - September 7 Issue

If you drove down the dirt road into Scout Island on Wednesday morning, you would have seen an interesting group of women all with some sort of chair, paper, and colour with easels. It was a plein air group, organized by artist Marie Nagel in connection with her opening at the Station House Gallery.
Plein air painting sounds like something fancy, but all it means is to be on location of whatever it is you are painting or drawing.
Nagel initiated the plein air group Wednesday, but it was successful largely in part to the Station House Gallery for getting the word out to local artists. And despite the rain and cold, 13 local artists showed up to paint, and draw along the bank of the marsh at Scout Island.
Everyone had a different choice of medium; there were pastels, water colours, oils, acrylics, and even pencil crayons, as everyone scattered to find the perfect spot to set up their easel.
Amoung Nagel, there were a few well know lakecity artists willing to brave the rainy weather; Linda Sawyer, Christie Richardson, and Shelley Sharpe just to name a few.
Nagel is originally from Wells, and ran a gallery there for 17 years, she now resides in Victoria and paints plein air with two local groups. She doesn’t paint exactly what is in front of her, but instead uses her surroundings as inspiration.
Her Plein Air show at the gallery opened last Thursday night and will be on display until October 2.
